“Elgin was founded in 1835 by James Talcott Gifford, a settler from New York who named the community after a Scottish hymn tune. The city incorporated as a town in 1846 and as a city in 1854, and a dam built on the Fox River in 1838 powered its early mills. After a rail line reached Elgin in 1850, the city grew into a major dairy-shipping center, and later became home to the Elgin National Watch Company, incorporated in 1864, whose factory complex was for nearly a century — until 1969 — the largest watchmaking site in the world.”
